What are the pathways of alcohol?

1. Mouth- Alcohol is intake.

2. Stomach - alcohol directly goes into the stomach. Small amount goes through the walls of the stomach and into bloodstream. Most alcohol goes down the small intestine.

3. Small Intestine- from the stomach, the alcohol goes into the small intestine. Most alcohol goes into the walls of the intestine and into the bloodstream.

4. Bloodstream- The bloodstream then carries alcohol to all parts of the body like the brain, heart, and liver.

5. Liver- Bloodstream carries the alcohol around the body and also through the liver. The liver oxidizes alcohol, changing it to water, carbon, and energy. The liver can oxidize only about one-half ounce of alcohol an hour. Until the liver has time to oxidize all the alcohol, the alcohol passes through all parts of the body like the brain.

6. Brain- Alcohol goes to the brain almost as soon as it is drunk carried through the bloodstream. Alcohol keeps passing through the brain until the liver oxidizes all the alcohol.
